Daniel Berrigan
Norfolk Rise Vineyard Winemaker
Dan Berrigan joined Kreglinger Wine Estates and Norfolk Rise Vineyard in February 2008 as the vintage assistant winemaker, in May 2008 his position as assistant winemaker was made permanent. Upon the departure of the previous winemaker in November 2008, Dan was elevated to the position of winemaker for Norfolk Rise Vineyard.
Growing up in Perth, Western Australia, Dan began studying for his Bachelor of Agricultural Science at the University of Western Australia after being inspired by family holidays to Margaret River and his parents decision to establish a vineyard on some recently purchased land. At the time of studying, there was a course in Oenology and Viticulture at the University of Western Australia which required 1 year of study at the University of Adelaide’s Waite campus to focus on the Oenology requirements for the course. Soon after relocating to Adelaide for the course, Dan saw that his future winemaking would benefit greatly from completing the remainder of his studies at the world renowned Waite campus so he made the decision to relocate to Adelaide permanently to study. In December 2003 Dan graduated from the University of Adelaide with a Bachelor of Agricultural Science, majoring in Viticulture and Oenology.
By the age of 27 Dan had already completed 12 vintages in regions as diverse as the Perth Hills, Tasmania (this included a vintage at Pipers Brook Vineyard) and Mount Benson in Australia as well as internationally in Oregon and California’s Russian River region. By travelling between the northern and southern hemispheres for vintages, Dan was able to gain experience in a variety of small and medium sized wineries, that specialised in premium and ultra-premium wines from cool climates. This also presented opportunities to work closely with, and learn from, a range of highly regarded winemakers.
